Reunion Conversations
Context
Creating a Context for Communication to Take Place:
For some
uncomfortable communications that might have to take place between you and
another it works to create a
context for communication to take place. It might go like this—
Note:
You: I read a website about reunion
conversations. Did you get to read it?
Classmate: No. I don't have a computer.
You: The site describes how reunions are the
perfect time to complete our old relationships and to create new ones. It says
that we first have to be willing to acknowledge that we have had an implied
agreement to not be totally open and honest with each other. It says that the
way we have been communicating has limited our ability to produce the results we
say we want in life.
The web site suggests that if you and I would be
willing to create a new set of agreements between us that the reunion will be a
turning point in terms of health, happiness, love, and success.
You: It also says that the ideal relationship
is one in which both parties agree to communicate openly, honestly, and
spontaneously, zero significant thoughts withheld. Would you like to do that with me?
Classmate: "Ah, um, I don't know."
You: OK. If you decide that you'd like to,
let me know, OK?
And move on to the next classmate.
As you can see, the more classmates who read this
website, the easier it will be to create a new communication agreement.
The URL to Reunion Conversations could be included
in the invitation. Then the example might go like this—
You: "Hi."
Classmate: "Yes. Let's do it. Let's go sit
over there."
