About being an Assistant-Co-facilitator

Accepting Volunteers Now

There are ten volunteer Assistant-Co-facilitator positions.

Three of the ten positions are:

  • Support Group Supervisor
  • Assistant Support Group Supervisor
  • Sound/Video Supervisor

The remaining seven Assistant-Co-facilitators rotate through different tasks throughout each of the 24 three-hour sessions.

Tasks include:

  • Setting up
  • Staging
  • Camera operator
  • Microphone handler
  • Answering viewer telephone calls
  • Reading viewer's comments on camera
  • Closing down

Assistant Co-facilitators do what it takes to present a support group. They also have the job of being Co-facilitators, raising their hand at any time and contributing feedback during conversations between the facilitator and a participant. This procedure ensures greater accuracy and completeness with each conversation.

Part of a Co-facilitator's job is to raise both hands and wave vigorously if they hear anyone communicating abusively. Communications delivered by Assistant-Co-facilitators have priority over all other communications, including those of the Facilitator's.

Assistants are reimbursed for transportation costs to and from the studio.

Assisting is comparable to one semester of a proposed university four-year Leadership Training Program.* It's assumed that for those who wish, the assisting experience will lead to advancement opportunities; this is based upon the fact that Assistants will be on/off camera throughout the entire 24 sessions; they will have earned the respect, and be known throughout the Big Island community, for their service. Upon completion of the 24-week support group Assistants will receive a letter of recommendation attesting to the fact that they have demonstrated:

1) A willingness and ability to work at a high level of integrity.

2) An ability to communicate responsibly.

3) Exceptional reliability and trustworthiness.

4) Exemplary commitment to civic service and responsibility.

5) An ability to function as a team member.

6) An ability to keep agreements and to honor their word.

Volunteers are needed for other jobs and tasks besides being an Assistant/Co-facilitator. Waivers of the prerequisites are possible for single-task and special assisting.

* Ideally all ten Assistant Co-facilitators will be from the same company—in which case the value will be evidenced via the company's moral and success with goals. Ten volunteer teachers from the same school would cause thousands of island parents to watch the program, some calling in offering feedback.
